Global Programme of Action

Nairobi (14 August 2015) – A recent study published in Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, has found zooplankton to ingest microplastics, which they mistake for food. Microplastics are defined as plastics that are smaller than 5mm in diameter. Global concerns over the impacts of microplastics as a pollutant have emerged in recent years as concentrations of these plastics have risen in the ocean. These microplastics come from a variety of sources, including personal care and cosmetic products (PCCP), plastic fibres used in clothing, pellets used to make other plastics, as well as from the fragmentation of larger plastic products.
